HOUSE SPARROW Passer domesticus

This familiar species arrived at Ascension, probably on board a ship, in 1985. In order to 'keep it company' several individuals were released in 1986. These birds formed a small colony around the Exiles Club in Georgetown. Searches in 2002 have yet to locate these birds and the species may now be extinct on the island, although there are rumours that House Sparrows now breed in Two Boats.
