FAIRY TERN Gygis alba

Fairy terns are circumtropical in their distribution. It is one of the few seabirds that still nests on the mainland of Ascension, with a colony on the cliffs and in the trees on the west side of Green Mountain. There is also a large population on the cliffs of Boatswainbird Island. The total population appears to be increasing at present and was recently estimated to number 5,300 birds. Their pure white plumage and inquisitive nature makes them easy to see while walking in the Letterbox area or on the western slopes of Green Mountain. (r.h. picture Roger Wilmore)
