BROWN NODDY Anous stolidus

BLACK NODDY Anous tenuirostris

Two species of noddy breed on Ascension. Both Black and Brown Noddies are tern-like birds with dark bodies and distinctive white caps. As their names suggest, Brown Noddies are paler than Black Noddies, and as a result the contrast with the white cap is strongest in the smaller Black Noddy. The Black Noddy outnumbers the Brown Noddy by about 20 to 1. The majority of Black Noddies breed on Boatswainbird Island, with smaller colonies on sheer sea cliffs around the south and east of the island. Brown Noddies breed on small offshore stacks, mostly off the north and west coasts of the island.
