TURTLE, GREEN

Chelonia mydas

From December to March, female turtles lay eggs on various beaches having travelled 1500 miles from Brazil. The safest way to see these great male and female turtles in the water is from a boat in Clarence Bay, but occasionally males are seen inshore. The Green Turtles are the subject of research being conducted by the Marine Turtle Research Group, University of Wales, Swansea. There are 3 distinguishing features between female and male; the latter has a pronounced tail, hooks on his front fins and a squarer head. The lower of the three pictures is a female.
