BALLOONFISH / "PORCUPINEFISH"

Diodon holocanthus

Always a gentle, shy fish, we nicknamed it 'popeye'. It stays close to the seabed, and tends to retreat under ledges when approached but, as it is a poor swimmer, is pushed out again in the surge. Their dark spots and brown blotches on a pale background are quite clear when seen over sand in shallow water. When frightened, it "puffs itself up". Note the Grouper behind the Balloonfish.
